layflat, panoramas have a new home

I took this photo on the island of Mallorca, Spain last summer. Like many islands with rocky terrain, you get truly breathtaking views from sea-side cliffs and hill tops and quickly find yourself taking dozens of snapshots in an attempt to capture the whole thing. One tool I use in this scenario is panorama. Nothing captures the awe of a panoramic view as well as, well, a panorama photo. If you follow my blog, you already know that I'm a huge fan of photo books - both mine and other people's. I love to print my photos in books not only for archival reasons, but also to display on my coffee table for the enjoyment of my family and friends. Printing a panoramic photo on a standard 4 X 6,  (or worse, square), aspect ratio doesn't quite do it justice. Of course you can print half of the photo on one page and the other ...

shooting myself

Image
As the year draws to a close, I have started collating the photos I will be including in the 2015 edition of my annual photobook print. I previously talked about why I do this, and why everyone should . This year has been particularly eventful for me. I've travelled quite a lot. There have been weddings, milestone birthdays, etcetera, etcetera. And as the 'guy with the camera', I've found myself shooting a lot of it, so I have many photos to choose from.  There are, however, very few photos of me. The ones that do exist are hardly printable.  Why? Well, I'm the guy with the camera. I'm always behind the camera, hardly ever in front of it.  Even more troubling is the fact that looking back, this has been the case for a long time. My friends and family can all look back fondly at the great photos of them I've captured over the years, while I'm left with occasional reflections in mirrors and shop windows, silly iPhone selfies and other such. ...

lanzarote part 1

Where has summer gone?!  Apart from it being mid-August already, it seems this summer has really zoomed by.  Time is moving so quickly. I was looking at my photo books I've made so far this year, and realised I hadn't shared any of the actual Lanzarote photos with you the awesome folk of the Internet.   Many of these photos are in the Blurb book I spoke about in this post .   The camera I had with me was the Olympus 35 RD. I opted for this camera because of it's size and versatility. There was going to be a lot of cycling and walking, so I needed something light and portable, while having a nice sharp lens that renders colours well. The photo below was shot wide open (f/1.7) indoors. Who can resist a mirror selfie?  Lanzarote was one of my summer travels, and boy has it stuck with me. It's a volcanic Spanish island in the Atlantic ocean off the western coast of Africa. It's such a unique place that one can't help being carried away at times with...

print them or lose them

Full Disclosure: This post contains  affiliate  links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links. I love Blurb, so I became an affiliate of theirs in order to support my hobby. Thanks. My very first DSLR was the Canon 350D, which I still use.  I decided to upgrade from a Nikon Coolpix 775 because my sister was getting married, and I needed to get better photos of the event - not as the official photographer of course, but as the guy grabbing all the candid shots of the family and friends.  I did just that and got amazing photos of the day which everyone appreciated.  Back then, disk space was quite a premium, so I’d archive photos away in CDs. About a decade later I was feeling nostalgic and decided to have a look at some of those photos.  I found the CDs exactly where I left them in storage, hurried to my computer, oh wait, I couldn’t.  I had a macbook that no longer included a CD/DVD drive.  ...
